La Corte di Danimarca
Villa Reale, Reggia di Monza
November 30, 2024 — Permanent
The Court of Denmark is an installation consisting of seven canvases, representing the seven members of the Danish court as scripted in Shakespeare’s Hamlet: Voltemand, Cornelius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Osric, a nobleman, and a few gentlemen.
The seven paintings draw inspiration from the complexity of Shakespeare's drama. They are designed to fit within the existing framed quadratures and are scaled to match the spatial dimensions of the walls. The canvases, conceived not just as symbols but as tangible presences, overlook the room as a counterpoint to the theatrical action, ideally ready to unfold right there, at the center of the Throne Room.
The narrative of the space intertwines with history, which, just over a century ago, marked the tragic destiny of the royal family here in Monza, just steps away from the Villa.
Visitors are tasked with traversing the space and time that separate them from that history, to observe the scene in its entirety. It is an invitation to identify with the indissoluble bond between theater and life, just as it was for Shakespeare and, in the 20th century, for Pirandello.
